Introduction
Treeline studies are often motivated by the general assumption thatcold distribution limits of the lifeform tree represent a universalbiogeographic margin that is particularly sensitive to recent globalwarming. But the existing body of scientific literature is less consis-tent and raises more questions than it provides answers. Not only isthe rate of treeline advancement in response to rising temperaturespoorly understood, but interactions between biotic and abiotic driv-ers of treeline dynamics, as well as ecological mechanisms behindsurprisingly stable treeline positions also remain unclear.
Here, we argue that natural treeline ecotones in undisturbedalpine and arctic settings are less sensitive to the ongoing anthro-pogenic warming trend than commonly assumed. Source: onlinelibrary.wiley.com.
