University of Oslo
The University of Oslo team is lead by Nils Chr. Stenseth.
Background
The University of Oslo team consists of well-established researchers in the fields of population ecology, evolution, epidemiology as well as statistical and mathematical modelling of ecological and evolutionary dynamics in space and time for a broad spectrum of ecological systems (including plague and other infectious zoonotic diseases). The team leadership is based at the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES), a highly successful former National Centre of Excellence founded and chaired by Stenseth during its first 10 years.
Introducing the infrastructure
The Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) is a well-managed centre located at the Department of Biosciences, UiO. The Centre has during the last decade received a total funding of 53 mill euro, and hosted 165 externally funded research projects (including a Nordic Centre of Excellence, a National Centre of Excellence, several EU/ERC funded projects (mainly Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) and is currently leading the Norwegian Earth BioGenome Project (EBP-Nor)). The Centre consists of ~120 members including students, researchers, technical and administrative personnel. CEES provides a truly international working environment, with staff and guests at any time representing more than 20 nationalities. The CEES research environment has during the last decade fostered 8 ERC finalists (Startingand Advanced Grant as well as EC Synergy). CEES has an internationally strong track record for genomics. The Norwegian Sequencing Centre (NSC) was established at CEES in 2009 and has continuously been upgraded with state-of-the-art sequencing facilities for in-house and external users. The current facility consists of a PacBio Sequel II system which can be used to generate state-of-the-art genomes for all species. Further, CEES also hosts an ancient DNA (aDNA) lab equipped for work on all kinds of ancient material such as sediments, seeds, museum skins, and bones from any organism, including human. CEES/NSC has a good solution for data-storage at NIRD (National Infrastructure for Research Data). NSC is on the Norwegian Roadmap for Infrastructure (2018 and 2020). CEES has modern meeting facilities (for both smaller meetings, seminars and workshops) – all equipped with modern audio/video facilities, well designed for remote interactions. CEES also has access to large conference arenas at the UiO.
